New Ultrasound Machine

Here at the PHP we have recently purchased an Ultrasound Machine.

Ultrasound is a form of imaging that allows us to look inside your pets body without surgery. It is completely non-invasive technique. The ultrasound machine sends sound waves into your pets body, listens to the echoes and the echoes form a picture of what is going on inside your pet. Ultrasounds can give us information about organs in the abdomen, the chest and heart, and the eye for example.

Our vets may suggest an Ultrasound if your animal has any of the following of these symptoms:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Lack of appetite (anorexia)
  • Fluid detected in the abdomen
  • A mass or abnormality found during a physical examination
  • Unexplained vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Urogenital problems
  • Abnormal bloodwork or x-rays
  • Heart murmur or abnormal rhythm
  • Panting or difficulty breathing

A routine ultrasound examination can take from 30-50 minutes in length. Routinely we will perform the scan conscious, but sometimes mild sedation is needed especially if samples are required.
