Preparing For The Firework Season And Keeping Our Pets Safe

The firework season is just around the corner, so now is the ideal time to start taking measures to keep pets safe and as calm as possible during this period.

Our pets have acute hearing so loud, unpredictable, high-pitched whistles, bangs and bright lights can be extremely overwhelming for them.

Common reactions include:

  • Shaking
  • Hiding away/trying to escape
  • Excessively vocalising
  • Pacing/restlessness
  • Increased likelihood of toileting in the home
  • Destructive behaviours

Preparing ahead of time can help formulate valuable routines which can help keep your pet calm.

Some tips include:

  • Exercise and walk pets early in the day
  • Keep pets indoors at night (start getting cats used to this now and remember to lock cat flaps)
  • Ensure pets are micro-chipped and their details are up to date.
  • Create a safe and secure space such as a crate/cat carrier covered with a blanket or a room with familiar blankets and toys.
  • Protect outside animals by covering or moving inside if possible.
  • Play calming music such as Classic FM
  • Use pheromone sprays and diffusers around the home
  • Use a ‘thunder-shirt’ specialist pet wrap to help your pet feel secure.
  • Keep windows and blinds closed
  • Keep calm around your pets and don’t leave them alone if distressed.
