Pet Blood Samples

My vet at PHP has recommended a blood sample from my pet.

What does this mean?

Having a blood sample taken from your pet is advised for many reasons as it give is an indication of what is going on inside the body.

Your pet might require a routine blood test or just be under the weather, or a bit quiet, not eating as much as normal, or generally unwell.

What is the next step?

Your PHP Vet will discuss what type of tests are needed, when this can be arranged, when you will get the results and the cost.

What does blood sampling involve?

At PHP your pet is taken to a calm and quiet area and held in a comfortable position by a trained member of the team.
Your pet’s fur is clipped to allow for visualisation of the vein and for cleanliness. This is usually done under your pet’s neck or foreleg.

Your pet’s skin is cleaned with antiseptic and sprayed with a cooling spray to reduce sensitivity.

The blood sample is carefully drawn into a syringe and placed into special tubes.

What happens next?

These tubes are placed in an analysing machine at the practice or sent away to a laboratory for special testing.

The results are added to your pet’s record so your Vet can interpret these and decide on the best treatment plan. Your Vet will discuss the results with you and explain their recommendations for your pet.
